Now for the Light Bar Installation
This is how the 2,400 mile 99 GT looked before the lightbar was installed.
Start by removing the back seat by pushing the two retainers located approximately 10 inches from the edge, then remove the seat back cushion by removing the two screws located in each corner. Then remove the side quarter trim panels and the retainer in the well. Remove the push in buttons holding the weather-strip at the front of panel. Also remove the speaker grills and rocker sill covers. Remove the seat belt retractor and slide through the panels before removing panels from car.
A view if the back seat area with the necessary parts removed. If your car has the 460 sound system, the speakers will also have to be removed. Now you are ready to begin the installation.
You will have to remove the plastic clip riveted to the panel. Easily done with a flat putty knife after prying up the edges with a screwdriver.
This is the money part of the job - not for the faint of heart. The interior panels will have to be drilled. The two small holes are for the mounting hardware and the light bar is mounted through the large hole. Templates are supplied and and exact placement is critical. The bar's cover will overlap the top hole to some degree and the two holes on the front have plastic caps to cover the holes, but their placement still needs to be correct.

Holes will need to be drilled in the post and the reinforcement plate is placed behind the inner door post. Using the a 4" C clamp to hold the bracket while you rivet it in place makes the job much easier. Make sure you also remove all the burrs from the back of the hole so the nut plate will fit flush and the rivets will hold.
Tim rivets the reinforcement plate in place.
The wiring for the brake light will need to be spliced into this bundle of wires. This is an easy job once the wires are located. One wire is black and the other is red with green. Note - Now is a good time to check the convertible top cylinder and lines for leaks and check the fluid level.
After installing the speaker and interior quarter panels, insert the light bar into the large hole at the top of each panel and lower the bar into place. Line up the bar with the previously drilled holes and install the two mounting screws and caps.
Tim finishes the job by removing the protective plastic from the bar.
Summary | |
This is a job for the experienced Mustanger. It's fairly straight forward, however the placement of the template is critical for a good clean look. The instructions are thorough and detailed. In just 2 to 3 hours you can have a different look for you convertible. The installation is basically the same for 86, 87, 88, 89, 90, 91, 92, 93, 94, 95, 96, 97, 98, 99, 01, 02, 03 and 04 Mustangs with any variances spelled out in the instructions.
