About this Project | |
We commonly are asked to perform installation of this item on customer cars. It is popular since this 18 guage metal divider is significantly stronger than the original cardboard divider common to vintage Mustangs. We have also found other adaptations for this piece. For instance it can be used for mounting base speakers. It can be finished in a number of ways that help finish the interior of the trunk compartment. It can be painted, insulated or carpeted in any combination depending on your goal. Certainly, with additional insulation, it will help reduce road noise as well as provide a stronger divider. If your goal is to retain originality but simply gain strength, it can be mounted in combination with the original cardboard divider. This is an easy do it yourself project requiring only basic tools and skills. For the purposes of this particular installation we simply painted the divider the same original color as the car to match the trunk interior. We have paints in all original Mustang colors if you wish to do the same.

|
This is the divider before any prep.
Clean the divider (both sides) with grease and wax remover or similar product.
If painting the divider, remember to prime it first. Allow to dry.
Then paint your selected
finish color on the side that will face to the rear (trunk) area. Allow
to dry before installing. If adding insulation and / or carpet, do
so now before beginning the installation. You are now ready to install
the divider.

Remove rear seat sections. First remove the bottom seat by pulling upwards at front lower edge of seat, then pull out (towards you) and remove from vehicle. The upper seat has two 3/8 bolts attached to the bottom. Remove the bolts, pull the seat up and out, then remove from vehicle.
Remove the rear quarter window handles by unscrewing the 3/32nd Allen head holding it and pull the handle off. (If your handles are reproduction you will need a thin flat head screwdriver as this is a soltted screw rather that an allen screw.).
The interior quarter panels are held by up to 6 screws. Remove the screws.
Hold the bottom of the panel and pull out, over the regulator, then up. Remove from vehicle.
Top | Remove cardboard divider. |
Place the divider in position using the 4 hooks on the rear seat support.
Once the divider is positioned work around it drilling the 33 holes, one for each in the divider, into the rear seat support using a 1/8th drill bit.
Insert and tighten your 33“ # 8 screws. We recommend working from the center outward.
Note: when you get to the bottom corners, apply pressure to fit the ends to the contour of the car chassis.
Congratulations! Your divider installation is now complete and you can re-install the interior quarter panels and upper/lower seats. |

Summary |
|
Now you have the satisfaction of having installed a stronger divider in a relatively short time. We would love to receive photos of any creative applications you may have of your installation. Especially using speaker setups or carpeted/insulated finishes. We’ll post them with this article for others to see. Good luck, we hope this helped. These instructions are valid for 64 1/2, 65, 66, 67 and 68 Mustang coupes and convertibles
